Using the place value strategy to add
Show Transcript
my people will come to mass today we are on lesson 1.7 we are on page 41 and we are using place value to add numbers together are going to use a map of the United States to unlock our problem and let's get our problem is planning a trip to Illinois he's airplane delays from Dallas Texas near Dallas Texas and thoughts Tulsa Oklahoma it didn't fly from Tulsa to Chicago how many miles is Dante fly to my question is asking me how many miles did Dante fly all together I think it takes 236 miles to fly from Dallas to Tulsa and it takes 585 miles to fly from Tulsa to Chicago to get my total mileage I want to add these two numbers together the all use my place value strategy or my old school way add these two addends or numbers together but first I want to get a good estimate of what my answered or my son will be I can think in my head to round these addends to the nearest hundred 200 + 600 is 800 there should be about Hundred Mile now let's go ahead and add these two numbers together the first thing you want to make sure you do when you set your problem up is to add your one first then your chance in your hundred and if you write your problem down on paper on your whiteboard you need to make sure you stack your ones on your one your tens on your tens or hundreds on your hundred so let's go ahead and let's add our ones I know six months is 11 one so I've regrouped my 110 into the tens place then I'll add 3/10 + 810 plus my 110 that are regrouped and I know that is 12:10 but I'm going to have to regroup and to the hundredths place so am I I had to regroup my tens as hundreds so now I want to add my hundreds together so 200 + 500 + 100 is 8 36 + 585 is 200 821 821 miles since 829 is close to my estimate of 800 my answer is reasonable because my real answer is close to my estimate probably did a really good job you can also use a commutative property to check your work remember the commutative property says I can change the order of my ad ends so in this case I could 585 + 236 I know 5 + 6 is 11 every group my ones can into the tens place 8/10 + 3 10 + 110 is 12 10 let's regroup that 100 over there to the hundredths place and then was at our hundred 100 + 500 + 200 is 800 my answers match alright people let's turn to page 42 and let's do a little work together let's go up to the top to the try this and we are going to add 500 3 + 48 in two different ways but first let us estimates and our go math estimated 563 to the nearest 10 which is 550 48 round to the nearest ten which is 50 MI should be 550 + 50 which I know is 600 my answer should be close to 600 let's try a the break apart strategy that we practiced on Friday and we learned that is a strategy to help us add numbers together by breaking them into their place value using expanded form 563 break into 500 + 60 + 348 we can break apart into 40 + H now I can add my place values together I know 3 + 8 is 11 60 + 4100 + 500 + 12 is imaginary 0 is 500 that looks like a 6 that the five sorry guys riding on the screens a little heart do 500 + 100 + 11 is 6 Jared 11 some of you liked using that strategy some of you didn't turn out let's go to Part B and let's use our place value to add remember to keep using place value successful you need to make sure you stack your place values right on top of each other notice my free ones are stacked over my eight ones my 6:10 or stacked over my 410 when I add this way I need to make sure I start adding at the one place so I can keep her out my problem let's go ahead and add get to a pin now that we go three ones plus eight ones is 11 one right by 11 and it was my one in the 11th Place my 110 6 + 4 + 10 + 410 is 10 10 + 1 more 10 is 111 so I break apart my and regroup. And then 5 + 1 is 6 611 also do you think for a minute and going to give you a question I want you to ask your neighbor I'll give you some time to talk how are these two methods alike and how are they different and take some time to talk to your neighbor there while you were talking I clean that sick that 500 up a little bit is that you in the strategies you add your place value one at a time which method do you think is easier pause and talk to your neighbor about which strategy think is easier either the break apart strategy or the place value strategy some of you might like the break apart tragic because it's easier to see all the values in the strategy you might love the place value strategy just because it's simpler to do in your head but you need to make sure if you use the place value strategy that you pay attention to where you are regrouping your extra tens and hundreds and that you don't forget to add those in all right let's Mosey Down to neck part where to try to use place value to add three addends notice our numbers are a little bigger now we just have more of that we have three a den in part A we are going to add 140 + 457 + 301 * it will come back to heartbeat if you want to go ahead and work the estimate part out you can too and guess which the Bowie week all right my people so if I want to add 140 Plus 457 + 301 using a place value strategy I stack on top of each other Aztec all my all my hundreds on each other that way I won't accidentally Miss add now I always add my one first. Was at R17 + 1 is a good now I want to add my 10 by 10 + 410 is 9 10 now I add my hundred 100 + 400 + 300 is 800 so 140 + 457 + 3 + 1 is 809 eh in a pod the moment so you can catch up let's go down to Part B let's add 173 + 102 + 328 if I'm writing this on my whiteboard at my paper I make sure I stay at my place values on top of each other before I add when my problem is setup correctly I'm ready to add start with my ones place first I had three one two ones plus eight ones which is 13 all right my three ones down and then I regroup my 110 into the tens place in 07 + 2/10 is 9 10 forget that extra 10 that I had to regroup so all add 110 and that makes a total of 1010 so Step2 when I have added my chance I know I have to read my tens as 100 so I already have my one written in the hundreds Colin and I have my zero tens left then I add my Hundred don't forget to add the regrouped 100 so 100 + 100 + 100 + 300 write 600 173 + 102 + 328 103 all right let's pause just a moment while you flip to the next page page 43 my people Rancho so I'm never one I want you to look at our problem and I wanted to circle the problem in which you need to regroup and then I want you to add your problem using your strategy that's easiest for you in the box with a pencil I'm going to give you time to circle the problem in which you need to regroup and then work that problem so I can do that and then we'll check to see how you did all right my people you should have circled the problem a because we do have to regroup in that strategy and since I'm doing it on my screen I ran out of room do I have mood problems over to the side and I set my problem up to Hangouts there we go and I set my problem up so I can add my wife and on top of my hundreds on top of my Hundred so now I'm ready to add 9061 + 4 is 10 101 down regroup the 110 1 + 9 is 10 10 + 8 is 18 so I have 18 10 * 800 100 + 400 + 200 is 700 so our answer is 780 now what I want you to do pause the video and I'm going to give you time to work on problems too 3 + 4 work your problems and then we'll check them together then pause the video and give them time for everybody to work on problems too 3 4 and 5 and then start the video we can check them together welcome back working so hard on your mass go ahead and let's check problem too and you know I forgot to tell you whether to estimate or not if you did fantastic is your brain if you didn't that's okay. To tell you about that I bet you notice you did not have to regroup at all so are some number 2 is 596 when I add my ones I have six one when I had my chance I have a 9:10 when I add my hundreds I have 500 for number three you know that you did have to regroup not just once but twice so let's start with our 1 9 + 5 is 14 + right are at 1 down reagrupar 110 1 + 7 + 9 is 17 really 17104 let's regroup at one over to the hundredths place and then let's add our hundred for 3 is 7 plus the one which is 800 so my answers 874 the number for add my ones and I Ciara 6 + 4 is 10 over that stuff on the screen regroup my one can into the tens place I know 8 + 1 is 9 plus the one more that I regrouped hundred so let me regroup that one into the hundreds place now I add 6 + 1 is 1000 the 123 there we go now number five I had three addends to add together and you may have noticed you did not have to regroup that R11 + 8 is 9 3 + 1 is 4 4 + 5 is 9 like that 2 + 4 is 6 + 1 more is 7 so we have 799 as our son all right my people we're still on page but now we're on the on your own heart you'll notice 6 7 8 9 10 and 11 they don't give you a whole lot of room to work so you may work your problems on your whiteboard you may work your problems on notebook paper if you choose that but either way work your problems and then write your answers in your book so they can be checked easily and then I want you to remember 12 you have a problem set up and don't you have the answers but you're missing some digits in your at is so you got to use some deep thinking to figure out the missing digit then I want you to do number 16 is your problem solving and the clues in your word problem to solve the go deeper problem for the on your own you may use your neighbor and you also may use your neighbor to work on the unlock the problem the problem right there we go to work on the problem solving page number 17 multiple part using the sink smarter problem and map to solve these problems in their work on problem 18 to help Max find the sum of the problem make your choices for yes or no if you have to do this step in the problem page 44 is in your workbook workbook give me and then page 45 and 46 will be passed out to you. Your independent practice page when you get to this page I just want you to work on your own to add using the place value strategy do your problem solving I will let you today go ahead and Mark out number 11 you don't have to do that and then as always the Backpage the two lesson check questions and then the for fire we be used so just to recap do you're on your own with a buddy a nearby neighbor do the problem solving with a nearby neighbor and then do the practice page and the reviews ride on your own
